Fun Games for Proofing, Maintaining & Strengthening Loose Leash Walking Skills

Fun Games for Proofing, Maintaining & Strengthening Loose Leash Walking Skills

The two games in this section are designed to help maintain, strengthen, and generalize the loose leash walking skills taught throughout the program while keeping training enjoyable and engaging for both dogs and humans.

Although presented as games, these activities serve an important training purpose. They provide opportunities to practise many of the skills introduced throughout the course while helping dogs remain engaged, responsive, and connected to the person at the other end of the leash.

These activities can be incorporated into private training sessions, group classes, pet care services, or everyday walks. They work equally well whether you are coaching a guardian and dog team or working directly with a dog yourself.

If you are delivering the six-class curriculum, these games make excellent activities for the final class. They provide an opportunity for participants to practise their new skills in a relaxed and enjoyable way while celebrating the progress they have made throughout the program.

Together, The Wobbles Game and The Chatterbox Game help strengthen many important loose leash walking skills, including:

• Following movement cues
• Changing direction
• U-turns
• Stopping together
• Maintaining a loose leash
• Paying attention to the handler
• Working around real-world distractions
• Building engagement and connection
• Responding to information provided through both verbal and body language cues

The games also help prevent walking patterns from becoming too predictable. Dogs are excellent pattern learners and can quickly begin anticipating where they are going or what will happen next. By occasionally introducing variety, changes of direction, and additional reinforcement opportunities, we help maintain engagement and strengthen the behaviors we would like to see during everyday walks.

The Wobbles Game focuses on movement, communication, responsiveness, and adaptability. It encourages dogs to pay attention to changes in direction and helps prevent them from becoming overly focused on reaching a destination. It can also be a useful strategy when working with dogs who tend to pull in specific locations or situations.

The Chatterbox Game focuses on engagement, connection, and reinforcement. By combining movement, social interaction, and food reinforcement, it helps dogs learn that staying connected with the handler is both rewarding and worthwhile.

Perhaps most importantly, these games remind us that training should be enjoyable. Loose leash walking is not simply about preventing pulling. It is about communication, teamwork, and creating positive walking experiences that encourage dogs to stay connected with the people who walk with them.

Feel free to adapt these activities to suit the individual dog, guardian, environment, or training objective. They can be used as structured training exercises, incorporated into everyday walks, or revisited whenever loose leash walking skills need a tune-up.

Additional Resources

As part of this professional toolkit, we have included a supplementary handout for both The Wobbles Game and The Chatterbox Game.
