Module Overview
A Case Study Approach
Resource guarding is one of the most common behavior challenges trainers and consultants encounter. Often misunderstood as “dominance” or stubbornness, it is actually a fear-driven behavior rooted in anxiety about losing something valuable. Left unaddressed, it can affect safety, erode trust, and strain relationships.
In this case study–based module, we’ll walk step by step through a real client example to explore how to assess, manage, and modify guarding behaviors. You’ll learn how to apply functional assessment (ABC), identify setting events and motivating operations, and shift emotional responses through desensitization and counter-conditioning. We’ll also cover the role of management, confidence-building skills like Drop & Trade and Go to Mat, and enrichment designed to support success.
By the end of the module, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the function of guarding behavior, practical tools for trust and safety, a structured 6-session intervention roadmap, and professional insights into documenting cases with accuracy and clarity. Designed for both guardians and professionals, this module empowers you to create safer, happier homes where dogs can thrive.
