Module Overview
A Case Study Approach
Reactivity to dogs and people is one of the most common reasons guardians seek professional help. Often mislabeled as “aggression” or disobedience, reactivity is usually an emotional response rooted in fear, frustration, or over-arousal. Left unaddressed, it can compromise safety, limit daily life, and increase stress for both dog and guardian.
In this case study–based module, we’ll follow a real client example of a large-breed dog struggling with reactivity on walks. Step by step, we’ll explore how to gather case information, apply functional assessment (ABC), and identify key antecedents, behaviors, and consequences. You’ll see how desensitization and counterconditioning (DS/CC) are applied in practice to change emotional responses, and how management strategies, relationship-building activities, and foundation skills support long-term success.
By the end of the module, you’ll have a clear framework for working through reactivity cases: from assessment to intervention, including management, enrichment, and practical skills such as Look at That, Find It, and Let’s Go. Whether you’re a guardian learning to help your own dog, or a professional looking to refine your case planning, this module provides structured guidance and professional insights to transform reactivity into resilience.
Note: If you’d like a refresher on how Desensitization and Counterconditioning (DS/CC) works in practice, revisit Module 3 before continuing.
