Module Overview
Module 3: Desensitization & Counterconditioning in Practice
Desensitization and counterconditioning (DS/CC) are cornerstone strategies in force-free training, helping dogs replace fear, anxiety, or stress with calm, confident responses. In this module, we explore how these principles look in practice across common real-world scenarios. Through a series of lessons and video demonstrations, students will see how carefully designed training steps can change both emotional responses and observable behavior.
While there are countless applications of DS/CC, this module focuses on a curated set of practical examples that highlight key principles and provide clear models to follow.
Lessons in this Module
🔹 Establishing the Clicker as a Conditioned Reinforcer
Learn how a neutral sound becomes a powerful secondary reinforcer through respondent conditioning, and why consistency (“click = treat”) matters for maintaining its strength.
🔹 The Magic Mat: Teaching Relaxation Through Shaping & Positive Emotional Conditioning
See how shaping successive approximations builds the operant skill of lying on a mat, while counterconditioning creates a positive emotional response, making the mat a portable “safe space.”
🔹 Conditioning a Positive Emotional Response to Storm-Related Stimuli
Watch how gradual exposure and careful pairing with reinforcement can reduce storm-related fear. Examples include rain sounds, visual storm cues, and simulated multisensory experiences, always at the dog’s pace.
🔹 Desensitization & Counterconditioning for Food Guarding
Video clips illustrate how to transform a tense situation into trust-building. Students will see step-by-step DS/CC protocols that reduce guarding responses while preserving the dog’s sense of safety and control.
🔹 The Calm Paws Protocol: Conditioning a Positive Emotional Response to Nail Filing
Follow a structured process of counterconditioning to nail care, from introducing the file as a conditioned stimulus to pairing touch and filing with reinforcement—always prioritizing relaxation, choice, and consent.
What You’ll Gain
By the end of this module, students will:
- Understand how DS/CC works in both theory and practice.
- Recognize the importance of careful observation, threshold management, and individual pacing.
- See how emotional learning and operant training work together to create real, lasting change.
- Leave with practical strategies to apply in their own work with clients and dogs.
This module offers a blend of technical precision and practical demonstration, equipping students with confidence to implement DS/CC protocols in humane, effective ways.
