NO MORE DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF!
The grief experienced after losing a pet can be profound and is often compared to the grief of losing a human family member. However, this type of grief is sometimes “disenfranchised,” meaning it is not always socially recognized or supported. This can make the grieving process even more difficult for the thousands of pet owners who experience this each day. A Pet Bereavement Companion, or a pet loss grief support specialist, provides emotional support and practical assistance to pet owners who are facing or have experienced the death of a beloved animal. Assisting clients can happen in various settings, including the client’s home, veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, or pet funeral homes and/or crematoria.
How Do I Certify as a Pet Bereavement Companion?
While there is no single path to becoming a Pet Bereavement Companion, it often involves a combination of education, training, and experience. Here at DogNostics, through our Pet Bereavement Companion Certificate program, we can provide you with the following to help you earn your Certificate.
Gain Relevant Experience: Experience in an animal-related field can provide a strong foundation. This helps you become comfortable being around animals. Pet training experience is also valuable, as it gives insight into the human-animal bond and its impact on clients.
Seek Specialized Training and Certification: Here at DogNostics, our program covers everything you need to get started to offer pet loss and grief support in your local community. The program covers topics like:
- The human-animal bond
- The grief process
- Euthanasia and aftercare procedures
- Coping strategies for pet owners
- Handling difficult situations
- Self-care for professionals to avoid compassion fatigue.
Develop Key Skills: To succeed in this role, you need strong communication, active listening, and empathy skills. Being able to remain calm and professional in emotionally charged situations is essential.
Why You Might Choose This Career
Choosing a career as a Pet Bereavement Companion is a deeply personal decision, often driven by a desire to help others and a profound empathy for the human-animal bond. Here are some of the key reasons why people are drawn to this field:
- Making a Meaningful Impact: You have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives during a moment of intense vulnerability. The comfort and support you provide can help a grieving person feel less alone and more able to cope with their loss.
- High Demand for Compassion: As pets become more integrated into our families, the need for professional, compassionate support during their death has increased. Veterinary clinics and aftercare providers are recognizing the importance of having dedicated staff for this purpose.
- A Rewarding Experience: While emotionally challenging, this work can be incredibly rewarding. Knowing that you’ve helped a family navigate a difficult time with dignity and respect can be a source of great personal satisfaction.
- Diverse Work Environments: You may find opportunities in a variety of settings, from veterinary practices and animal hospitals to specialized pet crematories or even in-home hospice services.
- Specialized Skill Development: You will develop a unique skill set that combines emotional intelligence and empathy with practical knowledge of end-of-life care and aftercare logistics.

DEBRA MILLIKAN. PCT-A, PCBC-A- DOGNOSTICS FACULTY. BEHAVIORSMARTS MENTOR
YOUR PROGRAM DIRECTOR & FACULTY
Having spent almost 50 years training dogs, 13 years as an obedience judge and many years in formal canine studies, Debra has a passion for helping others to better understand dogs and how to train them. Establishing her own training centre in 1979, back when aversive training was the only way known in Australia, she was ahead of her time in seeking new and better ways to build positive relationships with our dogs. Travelling to the UK and Europe enabled her to learn new techniques and the wonderful world of force-free training revealed itself to her.
Attaining a Diploma in Dog Training and Behavior Consulting and another in Animal Behavior Science and Technology from the Companion Animal Sciences Institute, she consolidated her theoretical skills by gaining perfect scores in the Competency Assessment Program (CAP) Levels 1& 2, a demanding skills program out of the UK.
Debra spent two years as Director of Animals on Course (a registered training organisation within the Australian educational framework), developing educational packages for Animal Studies and Companion Animal Services programs. She is currently an international assessor for the practical component of the Pet Professional Accreditation Board’s three credentials for training technicians, professional trainers and professional behaviour consultants.
Debra has spoken at the Pet Professional Guild’s Inaugural Education Summit in Tampa FL, and the New Zealand Inaugural Association of Pet Dog Trainers Education Meeting in Wellington. She has also spoken at the Pet Professional Guild Australia’s Education Meeting in Sydney, the Australian Association of Pet Dog Trainers Meetings in Sydney and Melbourne and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) – Animal Welfare Seminar in Melbourne. Debra has run (and still does run) workshops, both nationally and internationally covering topics such as canine body language and how to choose which dog is right for you for the public, cross-over workshops for those transitioning to +R methods, further education workshops on pet dog manners classes and CAP preparation workshops.
Having spent many years teaching puppy pre-school Debra has now spent almost 20 years as the Senior Volunteer Trainer for Canine Behavioural School Inc (CBS), a not-for-profit, volunteer dog training facility run by professional dog trainers in Adelaide, South Australia. Over the last several years she has helped to establish the CBS Aspiring Instructor program that educates future dog trainers, allowing them to gain experience under the mentorship of professional trainers. This program now attracts people from all over the state and has been instrumental in teaching cross over trainers the ways of force free training. Graduates from this course receive partial credit transfer for PPAB credentials. There is now interstate interest in volunteers from other dog training clubs participating in this course, with one club already having completed the two year program.
Debra is constantly learning from her two best teachers – Ned and Laila – two ‘second hand’ Brussels Griffons and together they have earned many trick and noseworks qualifications and the two Griffs have appeared on several occasions for promotions for canine adventure parks and on canine calendars.
