Apprentice Module Three – Developing Your Practical Training Skills

Getting the Most from This Module

Congratulations on completing Apprentice Module Two, and welcome to Apprentice Module Three.

Throughout the first two modules, you've developed a strong foundation in learning theory, communication, reinforcement, welfare, and practical training skills. You've explored how dogs learn, how to create positive learning experiences, and how thoughtful training is built on clear communication, careful observation, and compassionate decision-making.

In this module, you'll begin developing an even broader range of practical teaching skills while deepening your understanding of the science that underpins effective behavior change. You'll explore a variety of targeting techniques, learn how to teach both moving and stationary targets, and discover how these versatile skills can be applied to everyday training, cooperative care, and more advanced behaviors.

As your practical skills continue to grow, you'll also explore several important theoretical concepts, including differential reinforcement, reinforcement and behavior change, and stimulus control. These topics will help you develop a deeper understanding of why effective training works, allowing you to make thoughtful training decisions rather than simply following training recipes.

One of the themes running throughout this module is thoughtful training design. As trainers, we should never ask only, "Can I teach this behavior?" We should also ask, "Should I teach it?" Through lessons such as Should We Teach It? Teaching Crawl: Ethics, Welfare & Thoughtful Decision-Making, you'll be encouraged to consider biomechanics, welfare, individual differences, and ethical decision-making when selecting the behaviors we ask our learners to perform.

As before, we encourage you to watch each recorded lesson before spending a few minutes reading any accompanying notes.

Many lessons are accompanied by additional written resources designed to complement the recorded lesson rather than simply repeat it. Depending on the topic, these may include:

• Lesson Notes, providing additional explanations, practical examples, and further discussion to deepen your understanding.
• Professional Practice Notes, offering practical guidance on applying the concepts with pet dog guardians, developing your coaching skills, and helping you think like a professional trainer.
• Additional ABA Notes, where appropriate, introducing more advanced behavior analysis concepts to gradually expand your theoretical knowledge and prepare you for the later stages of the program.

Not every lesson will include every type of resource. Some lessons may simply include Lesson Notes, while others may also include Professional Practice or Additional ABA Notes where they add particular value.

You'll also notice that many concepts continue to build upon what you've already learned. Skills such as intelligent luring, introducing cues, reinforcement delivery, marker timing, and antecedent arrangement will reappear in new contexts, allowing you to strengthen both your understanding and your practical application. Each new lesson adds another layer to your growing professional toolkit.

Throughout the DogNostics Dog Trainer Certificate Program, we intentionally use a spiral curriculum. Rather than covering a topic once and moving on, you'll revisit important concepts throughout the Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master levels. Each time, you'll explore them in greater depth, refine your practical skills, and develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of both the science and the art of dog training.

Learning isn't simply about watching videos. It's about understanding the principles, reflecting on them, applying them with real learners, and continually refining your skills through thoughtful practice. Every training session provides another opportunity to observe, adapt, and grow as a trainer.
